Synopsis

This Case Lens, based on the Hollywood action-adventure thriller, Executive Decision, revolves around how Dr. David Grant (Dr. Grant), an Intelligence Expert along with a team of commandos take control of Oceanic Airlines flight 343 which is hijacked by a group of terrorists. The way Dr. Grant and his team regain the flight’s control and thwart the terrorists’ plan to detonate a bomb in Washington DC, offers insights into understanding the nature and the implications of organizational processes, in detail.

Prerequisite Viewing/Mandatory Viewing

The students/participants need to mandatorily watch the movie Executive Decision, without violating the IPR laws. The temptation of either exhibiting the movie in the classroom or the students/participants downloading the movie from any hosting sites should be desisted lest we set unwarranted precedents in violating mandatory IPRs.

Classroom Orchestration

This Case Lens (video consisting the introduction and the accompanying five questions) can be orchestrated in the classroom in the following suggested flow:

1. Asking the students/participants to view the movie 2-3 days before the classroom discussion
2. Playing/exhibiting the Case Lens video in the classroom
3. Ideally, the faculty/facilitator should analyze the first question and the remaining 4 questions should be analyzed by the participants/students. After giving them about 15 minutes, the classroom discussion/analysis should be attempted. This can be executed either by asking one of the teams randomly to present their analysis or each team should be allowed to lead a discussion for each of the questions
4. Each question would take varying times [the suggested timings are given in Exhibit (TN)-I] and it is highly recommended that the last 5 minutes should be spent on debriefing and synthesizing. The debriefing segment should be used to synthesize the expected learning outcomes of this Case Lens

The assignment questions, as outlined in the Case Lens video, are:

Why do you think processes are important for any company’s performance and growth? Why should anyone – especially those working in companies – imbibe the spirit of respect for processes?
II. What does this movie, Executive Decision, teach us about, ‘Respect for Processes’? What are the circumstances under which the processes can be bypassed?
III..................

Abstract

This Case Lens is based on the Hollywood action-adventure thriller, Executive Decision. The movie revolves around how Dr. David Grant (Dr. Grant), an Intelligence Expert, along with a team of commandos, has to take control of Oceanic Airlines flight 343 in less than four hours’ time, as the airline is hijacked by a group of terrorists, led by Nagi Hassan, to release their leader. But as the commando unit gets ready for a mid-air boarding operation, half of the team along with the head commando, Lt. Colonel Austin Travis, gets killed. The way the remaining commandos, Dr. David Grant along with the help of one of the flight attendants, Jean, regain the flight’s control and thwart the terrorists’ plan to detonate a bomb in Washington DC, offers enough insights into how one should “Respect the Processes” and also the circumstances under which the processes can be bypassed.
