Case Lens on Values in the Backdrop of Hollywood Movie, Firewall

Synopsis

This Case Lens is based on the Hollywood thriller, Firewall. Firewall is a movie depicting how a hapless security chief of an international bank was forced to loot his own bank to safeguard his family who were at a gun-point of the miscreants. The way Jack Stanfield (Jack) rescues his family and safeguards his bank’s interest too towards the end, offers enough insights into how one should respond when one’s basic values are challenged. This Case Lens enables a discussion on the importance of values in one’s personal and professional growth.

Prerequisite Exercise

The students/participants need to mandatorily watch the movie Firewall, without violating the IPR laws. The temptation of either exhibiting the movie in the classroom or the students/participants downloading the movie from any hosting sites should be desisted lest we et unwarranted precedents in violating mandatory IPRs.

Classroom Orchestration

This Case Lens (video consisting the introduction and the accompanying five questions) can be orchestrated in the classroom in the following suggested flow:

1. Asking the students/participants to view the movie 2-3 days before the classroom discussion
2. Playing/exhibiting the Case Lens video in the classroom
3. Ideally, faculty/facilitator should analyze the first warm-up question and the remaining four questions should be analyzed by the participants/students. The class should be divided into four learning teams and they should be asked to prepare for all the questions. After giving them about 15 minutes, the classroom discussion/analysis should be attempted. This can be executed either by asking one of the teams randomly to present their analysis or each team should be allowed to lead a discussion for each of the questions
4. Each question would take varying times (the suggested timings are given in Exhibit (TN)-I) and it is highly recommended that the last 5 minutes should be spent on debriefing and synthesizing. The debriefing segment should be used to synthesize the expected learning outcomes of this Case Lens.

Preamble to the Case Lens Discussion

The purpose of this Case Lens is to understand the importance of values in an individual’s personal and professional growth. Assuming that the students/participants would have watched the movie before the classroom discussion, this Case Lens poses a series of questions on how people with high-pedestal values get going even amidst daunting challenges.

There can be several questions coming out of the discussion (Annexure I for classroom discussion board) on this Case Lens. The faculty/facilitator should encourage as many questions as possible, for, asking right questions is in itself a skill for any thriving professional. Accordingly, Exhibit (TN)-II captures the questions (definitely not exhaustive) that were raised during the classroom discussion as well as the authors’ teaching plan discussions.............

Case Lens Analysis

I. Discussion on the Warm-up-Connect Question by the Faculty

What according to you is the importance of values in one’s personal and professional growth? What does it take to stand by the virtues of values and why do some people stick to their high-pedestal values even when they are challenged extremely?

Before starting the discussion the faculty sensitized the participants on the usage of the term ‘values-based decision making’ which is used in our everyday life quite frequently. Referring to the movie, the participants were sensitized to Jack’s values, who stood by his virtues and choose his bank’s security and safety over his own family. The movie subtly teaches the values of honesty, grit and courage. When Jack finds professional success, his family is abducted for looting bank’s money and that is when Jack painfully confronts with a moral dilemma of rescuing his own family and strives for bank’s safety. The way he dealt the unnerved situation aptly demonstrates how being true to your core values is more important than anything else..............
