On March 5th 2017, Dr. Harish Menon (Dr. Menon), Academics Head and VP, Centre for Learning Solutions (CLS) – a subsidiary of a prominent media conglomerate TNW Group, was thinking about the existing admission process at his institution. He had scheduled for a meeting with his team members the next day for improving the existing admission process. CLS received around 400 applications for the Post Graduate Diploma in Business Analytics (PGDBA) program from across India and admitted approximately 250 students to this program last year. There had been a substantial increase in the number of applications (700) received by the institution in this year. Dr. Menon wanted to ensure that the right set of students were admitted to PGDBA program, hence, he wanted to reexamine the selection parameters to identify the right candidate for this program...........

Synopsis

CLS, a subsidiary of TNW Group, a Media Conglomerate, was engaged in the business of imparting vocational training, certifications and corporate education in wide range of subjects and operates learning centres at various locations in India. Dr. Harish Menon, Academics Head and VP, CLS, wanted to improve the admission process and wanted to ensure that the right set of students were admitted to their Post Graduate Diploma in Business Analytics (PGDBA) program, but he was not sure about the parameters to identify ideal students for this program. Dr. Menon was sure that the number of applicants for this program would continue to increase as long as they selected good students and placed them successfully in careers in their domain.

Abstract

This caselet is used to introduce the students/participants to the concept of logistics regression and multiple regression in the backdrop of the the dilemma of identifying the right students for Centre for Learning Solutions (CLS), a subsidiary of the Media Conglomerate – TNW Group. CLS was engaged in the business of imparting vocational training, certifications and corporate education in wide range of subjects and operates learning centres at various locations in India. Dr. Harish Menon (Dr. Menon), Academics Head and VP, CLS, wanted to improve the admission process for the PGDBA program that was launched in 2015. Although the institution’s placement team had arranged for placements, only 60% of the first batch students were placed. Dr. Menon thought it would affect the future admission. Hence, he wanted to ensure that the right set of students were admitted to their Post Graduate Diploma in Business Analytics (PGDBA) program.

  • To develop a model to classify a group of students based on relevant variables and predict whether a student would get placement.
  • To understand the criteria to set a best cut-off probability to ensure that the right set of students are admitted to PGDBA program.
