Manohar (CHRO at ABC Auto)”, explained Karthik to Vinod, his colleague working in the corporate HR team who had missed the meeting. “The key takeaways from the meeting were: every organization promises certain value proposition to its employees. The difference between any company and a dream company that people aspire to work for, is the delivery of that promise that the employer makes. As much as this is challenging, Manohar is piqued by the fact that, the interpretation of the underlying concept of career management is even more obscure.”................

ABC Auto Pvt. Ltd., (ABC Auto) is an Indian firm, which is primarily involved in manufacturing three wheelers. It has 5,000 employees pan India. ABC also has three manufacturing plants at different locations, which produce auto components and supply to other OEMs. ABC Auto has been in the business for over three decades and was among the top three players in three-wheeler market with over 25% market share..........

Current Scenario at ABC Auto

The CHRO had formed a team of four young talented people from his department. Their job for the next three months was to assess and map the current scenario of Career Management practices at various locations of ABC Auto, Identify best practices within and externally and finally recommend a framework to manage the career of employees in line with their aspirations..............

Internal and External Study

To start with, they first went through reports of various studies (Exhibit III (a) and Exhibit III (b)) in the last three years. The great places to work had rated ‘Career Opportunities@ABC Autos’ well below the industry average Top 50. An annual Employee Engagement survey was undertaken by the central HR team, whose three years average scores also pointed out..............

The Recommendation

The team after connecting all the dots, brainstorming on various possibilities finally came up with a solution: the framework for Career Management @ ABC Autos. The Career Management Framework will be a four-step process as shown in Exhibit VI............

The Challenge Ahead

Manohar was left with more questions in mind than before when the team presented their final recommendation after three months of detailed study. “What would happen to the existing job rotation and T&D practices? How to implement this, if at all I decide to follow the same? To create such a system is a big challenge, but a bigger concern is its sustenance once it becomes reality..............

ABC Auto Pvt. Ltd. (ABC Autos) is one of the top players in the country manufacturing three wheelers. With a 5000+ strong workforce Pan India, they operate out of multiple manufacturing plants to produce auto components, which are supplied to other OEMs too. By 2020, ABC Autos wants to be among the top ‘most admired brands’ in the country. They believe that every organization promises certain value proposition to its employees and the difference between any company and a dream company that people aspire to work for, is the delivery of that promise that employer makes. One of their core philosophies was to provide abundant learning opportunities along with an empowering environment to its employees. They believed this would ultimately result in the top talent seeing a long-term career with their company. This case study is about designing a Career Management Framework, which would facilitate career conversations of employees leading to meaningful job rotations in line with their career aspirations.
